My questions only grew after I had my baby and my milk finally came in. I watched endless videos on Youtube and read all the blog articles on Pinterest. I want this article to be the only one you have to read to get all the information you need for a successful breastfeeding and pumping journey.

I will start with my list of pumps, but check out the FAQ and my personal story with pumping and breastfeeding at the bottom of the list.

Disclaimer

I want to validate that every mom will have their own unique and vital experience regarding your breast milk journey. In this article, I will be sharing my experience. I am not a doctor or a lactation consultant, so if you have questions about what I share, please consult with a trusted professional. I do hope I can provide helpful first-hand experience for you.

My Breastfeeding Journey

My journey started when my daughter was born. The first thing that happened after my daughter was born was the midwife placed her on my chest, and she proceeded to use her little legs to kick her way up to find something to eat. She latched on and started doing her thing.

Pro Tip: Your body makes as much milk as your baby tells it to make. If the baby drinks more than your body will produce more milk. It is common for babies to cluster feed until the mom’s milk comes in to encourage your body to get the factory going.

She then proceeded to drink for the next 24 hours. This is not what all babies do. Most babies will eat and sleep most of the first few days. My baby however is a special case of never sleeping and always eating. She did not sleep at all the first 24 hours (and neither did it). She just kept eating and eating until my milk came in 3 days after she was born.

I did my first pumping session a few days after my milk came in. I was engorged and I thought I needed to pump and empty my supply in order to find relief. This mindset was actually me being miseducated and ended up causing issues for me, read more about that later. I got out my Luna Motif breast pump that I bought through my insurance. I was super confused by where all the pieces went and I had to watch a youtube video on how to set that thing up.

Once I got it figured out I pumped for 5 minutes and I got 4 ounces and it was a super strange experience. The pump made this strange sound that was not relaxing and I felt like a literal cow. I was not a fan of pumping.

From this time onward I would only pump when I was going to be out and would need a bottle or if my daughter slept through a feed. I was in a position where I worked from home so I did not need to have a massive freezer supply and I preferred breastfeeding to bottle feeding so I only needed enough milk for a few bottles in case my husband wanted to feed our daughter.

I remember around 4 or 5 months she dropped from eating every 2 hours to needing milk every 3 hours. This caused some issues for me at night because she would go to sleep at 6 or 7 and I would be ready to empty my supply right when I was going to bed, but she was starting to sleep longer at night.

I decided to pump at my bedtime and save that milk because I would need to feed her around midnight or 1am and I would be ready to empty again. This worked for me until she started to sleep longer at night.

I was worried I could lose my supply if I did not breastfeed or pump at night. My baby would have nights where she slept through the night or only wanted to eat once and those nights were very uncomfortable for me. I actually would set an alarm for 2am where I would wake up and pump just to go back to sleep. That was exhausting and I thought, is this what I am supposed to do? How do breastfeeding moms survive a year with no sleep?

After meeting with a lactation consultant who explained to me how breastfeeding works after 6 months I felt comfortable enough to stop pumping at 2 am. At 6 months I was still pumping every night before bed but I would not feed at night unless my daughter woke up and needed milk. My supply did not drop and if my baby ever needed milk at night there was always enough for her to be satisfied enough to go back to sleep.

My baby’s doctor actually told me she did not need to eat at night at 6 months, but I was not ready to cut her off. I did not stop feeding her at night until she was 10 months old.

At 7 months we went on a trip to Asia and the time change was very difficult for her. Her days and nights were flipped so she would only drink milk at night and she would refuse milk during the day. This was so hard for me because my body had adjusted to the time change so I was making milk the opposite of when she was drinking. This led to some issues with breastfeeding. She would not latch and I was engorged.

I went on this trip without a breast pump because I did not want to lug that big thing around. That was a big mistake because now I am in a different country where I was not sure if anyone even knew what a breast pump was. Luckily my parents were living in Asia at the time and my mom was able to order me a Chinese breast pump. I could not read the symbols on the pump but I figured things out.

My mom ordered me a wearable breast pump. This was a game changer for me and pumping. Now I tell all new moms to invest in a wearable breast pump. Forget the large and complicated traditional breast pumps, wearable and portable is where the future of breast pumping is.

Now pumping is so easy for me and It is way less of a chore. That is why I wanted to write this post about the best Wearable breast pumps and explain my relationship with pumping. I once hated pumping and now it is a breeze for me all because I made the switch to a wearable breast pump. I hope this list of wearable breast pumps is helpful to you in picking the right pump for you. I did include some traditional pumps as well because I know that the wearable pumps are much more expensive and insurance does not always cover them.

If you want to breastfeed for a year or more, having a pump you love will make the difference between you making your goals and stopping breastfeeding. Whatever way you feed your baby is best and will have its own challenges. Make sure you get yourself set up for success in whatever method you choose. That means if you want to exclusively pump, you need the best pump. If you want to bottle feed with formula, you need a formula system that makes preparing bottles easy. If you want to breastfeed with pumping as a support, you will need a great pump to help you.

Breast Pump FAQ
What are the most popular breast pump brands?

The most popular breast pump brands are Spectra, Luna Motiff, Willow, Elive, Lansinoh, Medela. In my experience you do not need to spend the money on one of these brands to get a high quality breast pump. I bought a random chinese brand breast pump and it is my favorite breast pump I own.

What types of Breast pumps are there?

There are three main types of breast pumps:

  1. Manual Breast Pumps: Manual breast pumps are operated by hand and require you to pump the lever or squeeze a bulb to express milk. These pumps are affordable, lightweight, and portable. However, they require more time and effort to use than electric pumps, and may not be suitable for mothers who need to pump frequently or for extended periods of time.
  2. Electric Breast Pumps: Electric breast pumps are powered by electricity and use a motor to create suction that expresses milk from the breast. These pumps can be single or double (meaning they express milk from one or both breasts at the same time) and are available in different models with varying levels of suction and speed. Electric breast pumps are generally faster and more efficient than manual pumps, but they can be more expensive and less portable.
  3. Wearable Breast Pumps: Wearable breast pumps are a newer type of breast pump that allows you to pump hands-free, meaning you can pump while doing other activities. These pumps typically use a small motor and fit inside your bra, so they are very discreet and portable. Some wearable pumps are electric and others are manual, but all are designed for convenience and ease of use. However, wearable pumps may not be as efficient as traditional electric pumps, and they may not be suitable for mothers who need to express large amounts of milk or who have difficulty with letdown.

Manual breast pump vs Electric breast pump?

Manual and electric breast pumps are the two main types of breast pumps available on the market, and they have their own unique benefits and drawbacks.

Manual breast pumps are operated by hand and do not require electricity or batteries. They are usually smaller and more portable than electric pumps, making them a good option for moms who need to pump on-the-go or travel frequently. Manual pumps are also typically less expensive than electric pumps, making them a good option for those on a budget. However, they require more physical effort and can be tiring to use for extended periods of time. They also typically express milk at a slower rate and may not be as efficient as electric pumps.

Electric breast pumps use a motor to create suction that expresses milk from the breast. They are usually faster and more efficient than manual pumps, making them a good option for moms who need to pump frequently or for extended periods of time. Electric pumps can also be single or double (meaning they express milk from one or both breasts at the same time), which can save time and increase milk production. However, they are typically more expensive than manual pumps, and they require a power source, making them less portable than manual pumps. They can also be noisy, which can be a concern if you need to pump in a public or quiet setting.

In summary, manual breast pumps are more affordable and portable, but require more physical effort and are not as efficient as electric pumps. Electric breast pumps are faster and more efficient, but are more expensive and require a power source. The choice between the two ultimately depends on your personal needs and preferences.

What supplies do I need to go with my breast pump?

In addition to a breast pump, there are a few supplies you will need to effectively and comfortably express breast milk. Here are some common supplies you may need:

  1. Breast milk storage bags or containers: You will need a way to store and freeze your breast milk for later use. Breast milk storage bags or containers are designed to safely store breast milk and keep it fresh.
  2. Breast pads: Breast pads are worn inside your bra to absorb any milk that leaks between feedings or pumping sessions.
  3. Nipple cream: Breastfeeding or pumping can sometimes cause nipple soreness or discomfort. Nipple cream can help soothe and heal sore nipples.
  4. Extra pump parts: Over time, pump parts can wear out or become damaged. It’s a good idea to have extra parts on hand, especially if you plan on pumping frequently.
  5. Cleaning supplies: You will need to clean your pump and pump parts after each use. You can use soap and water or a specialized cleaning solution designed for breast pumps.
  6. Hands-free pumping bra: A hands-free pumping bra can make it easier to pump without holding the pump in place, freeing up your hands to do other tasks.
  7. Power source: If you have an electric pump, you will need a power source, such as an outlet or batteries, to operate the pump.

Overall, the supplies you need will depend on your individual needs and how often you plan on pumping. It’s always a good idea to have some extra supplies on hand in case you need them.

How do I clean my breast pump parts?

Cleaning your breast pump parts is important to ensure the safety and hygiene of your breast milk. Here are the general steps for cleaning breast pump parts:

  1. Disassemble the pump: Take apart all the parts of the pump that come into contact with your breast milk. This typically includes the breast shields, valves, membranes, bottles, and bottle caps.
  2. Rinse with cold water: Rinse all the parts in cold water to remove any milk residue.
  3. Wash with hot, soapy water: Wash all the parts in hot, soapy water. Use a bottle brush to clean the inside of the bottles and a nipple brush to clean the breast shields. You can also use a specialized cleaning solution designed for breast pumps.
  4. Rinse with hot water: Rinse all the parts with hot water to remove any soap residue.
  5. Air dry: Place all the parts on a clean towel or drying rack and allow them to air dry. Do not use a dish towel or paper towel, as these can harbor bacteria.
  6. Store in a clean, dry place: Once the parts are dry, store them in a clean, dry place, such as a sealable plastic bag or container.

It’s important to note that some breast pump parts may be dishwasher safe. Check the manufacturer’s instructions to see if this is the case for your pump parts. Additionally, some parts may need to be sterilized after washing, especially if your baby is premature or has a weakened immune system. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for specific sterilization guidelines.

How do I get rid of fog on my breast pump parts?

Mix 1:3 distilled vinegar and water in a bowl. Put your separated pump parts in and let them set for 10-15 minutes. Then rinse them in cold soapy water. Let them air dry. The fog will be gone like magic. Just because your pump parts are foggy, does not mean they are dirty but I like to do this once a month to keep them fresh.

Do I need the Willow breast pump?

Whether or not you need the Willow breast pump depends on your individual needs and preferences.
